ERWIN SINGH BRAICH A CANADIAN SUCCESS
“My father came to Canada from his native India and he did so hoping that he and eventually his family could have a brighter future in Canada and for this I am grateful.”
Erwin Singh Braich is the very definition of the Canadian success story. Canadian born Braich is the eldest son of pioneer Sikh lumber baron, the late Herman Singh Braich (1911-1976), who immigrated to Canada, from Punjab, India, in 1927. (more info re: Herman Singh Braich available at:http://www.missionarchives.com/missioncity/citizens/citizens.html#herman The story of the Braich family and Erwin Singh Braich is indeed, an inspiring tale of hardwork,
In 1996 he was named the Citizen of the Year by his hometown, Mission, B.C. He was unable to attend the ceremony in person, due to the fact that he was he was the only Canadian, in a group of 15 business leaders, who was meeting with U.S. Vice-president, Al Gore and Russian Premier Viktor Chernomyrdin, to discuss market reforms for former Soviet Block Countries.perseverance and vision. The example that Mr. Braich has given to the Indo Canadian community in B.C., Canada is a template of success. World Leaders Ask Braich For Help
Mr. Braich also helped build the Erwin Singh Braich Sportsplex in Abbotsford, BC and Braich, was instrumental in the development of the Mission Sikh Temple on Rai Avenue. ”We’re going to show the world that Mission welcomes people from diverse cultural backgrounds.” These were the words of then Mission Gur Sikh Society director Erwin Braich at one of the many town hall meetings that took place during the pre-planning stages.
“We are so fortunate to be living in a country such as Canada and have the freedoms and facilities we do,” stated Braich, a well-known Canadian industrialist and philanthropist. “It is heartbreaking to think of what others around the world have to go through just to survive on a day to day basis. For the price of two Starbucks lattes a young child can go to school for a month and have money left over … depending on what size of latte you prefer of course!”http://www.justiceandtruthforall.com
In June of 1999, a lawyer from West Vancouver – Brian McLean – and his clients Glenn Walsh (a resident of Kamloops, B.C. and Valetta, Malta)/Tercon Contractors Ltd., filed a Petition in the Supreme Court of B.C., which initiated bankruptcy proceedings against Mr. Braich.
Earlier that same year, Erwin Singh Braich, a well respected and internationally known industrialist and philanthropist, was voted – Business Person of the Year – by the International Punjabi Chamber of Commerce. Business person of the year.
Erwin Singh Braich is no stranger to expensive litigation as thirteen years ago he was involved in a profile divorce trial that was initiated in the County of San Diego Superior Court on April 15th, 1994 (Case no. D378198).
In the early 1990′s Braich, after retiring from active , was residing part time in seaside La Jolla, California, with his wife and two children. It was during this time that a divorce and child custody litigation was commenced by his former wife. Court records indicate that ex-wife Kulbinder Braich was seeking a lump sum of approximately US $26 million and in addition was seeking monthly payments for her and their two children of approximately US $24 thousand.
The protracted litigation was eventually ordered to British Columbia Supreme Court by San Diego Superior Court Judge Christine Pate. The ensuing lawsuit is noted for setting many records and testing a variety of precedent setting decisions under Canadian law. The final resolution of this complex legal battle was delayed by the Canadian House of Parliament’s adoption of the new Family Maintenance Enforcement Act in 1997.
Braich added that in addition, “currently one of our Group’s Directors of Operations for Africa, Mr. J. Von Hardenberg, has been in the Democratic Republic of Congo for months at a time. This country has recently held their first free elections in over 40 years. “This recent election was the largest such mission ever taken on by the United Nations and thus far appears for the most part to have quelled the violence that has taken the lives of over 4 million people.”
“We hope to be able to assist this very young democracy grow and flourish so that it perhaps can serve as an example of what is possible when people come together and help one another to improve the lives of those who are most in need in the world,” added Dhillon.
This blog has edited anything to do with Braich matter as instructed by BC Supreme Court on March 8, 2010. The original motion was made by KPMG’s counsel Gudmendseth Mickelson LLP.
The motion contends that these blogs had disparaging comments. As they were unmoderated, KiDDAA Magazine did not validate them.
The staff of KiDDAA Magazine (http://www.kiddaa.com), received on Thursday, March 4, 2010, via email, a Notice of Motion by KPMG’s counsel (Gudmundseth Mickelson LLP) – This was entered into the Vancouver Court Registry on March 2, 2010; as well as a hand-written Short Leave Application. Both were surprisingly granted, on an ex-parte basis by Honourable Chief Justice Bauman on March 3, 2010. This Motion is in regards to the decade long involuntary bankruptcy matter of, well-known Canadian philanthropist and industrialist, Erwin Singh Braich, 54,(Action No. 193466VA99 – Vancouver Registry). Along with others, KiDDAA Magazine had a unmoderated blog where some bloggers commented on Braich and other matters.
It was during this period of time that KiDDAA Magazine temporarily faced some rather harsh treatment from Facebook for some of the content that was posted relating to this matter.
KiDDAA Magazine had their account suspended and was forced to go offline, at the urging of “certain parties”. Facebook restored KiDDAA Magazine’s account, including all content, shortly after the magazine deployed their legal advisors.
In a strong and detailed letter to the court, it was clearly made known that the magazine obviously had only one business day – Friday, March 5, 2010 – to retain a lawyer for the Monday, March 8, 2010, morning Chambers Hearing. The lightning speed at which KPMG, their counsel and the Court proceeded is allegedly only one of the many violations of statutes, court guidelines, policies, and ultimately the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which has been committed by these parties.
The letter further goes on to apprise the Court that the motion filed by KPMG is a “clear violation of our rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms” and that, “Any decision pronounced in haste, would only serve to oppress others in the future, as any decision pronounced……could be relied upon by others trying to violate Freedom of Speech and the Charter Rights of Canadians”.
The letter ends by stating, “In our humble opinion, to blame KiDDAA Magazine for any activity that is considered disparaging without proof thereof is simply unacceptable in Canada”.

Braich’s contributions to B.C. aren’t confined to Mission, however. He helped fund the revamping of the the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame when it was relocated from the PNE grounds to B.C. Place stadium. He donated funds for the construction of the Erwin Singh Braich Special Exhibits Gallery.
“I was fortunate to be among the chosen people. I’m very proud that there was three Indians among the 10 people involved, the other two being Mr. Herb Doman and Mr. Asa Johal. I think that speaks volumes for the Indo-Canadian community and its inherent contribution to the fabric of society in B.C.”
